In his quest to seek out the people and ideas shifting how the world works to make it better, Scott Henderson speaks with Henry Timms, Deputy Executive Director of 92nd Street Y and Sharon Feder, COO of Mashable. Together, Timms and Feder launched the Social Good Summit in New York and are spearheading the Giving Tuesday initiative.
The Social Good Summit took place this year on September 22-24 in New York City – at the heart of UN Week. Formed in partnership between 92Y, Mashable, the UN Foundation, and several others, this summit fosters a global conversation and community around the use of technology and innovation to drive social change. In working with the United Nations, the Summit brings important conversations, many of which typically occur behind the closed doors of the UN, out onto an open platform of collaboration. To continue engaging the community and driving policy initiatives, the Summit plans on publishing a “white paper” of sorts with the data, ideas, and information collected during this year’s event.
And, Timms and Feder are not done yet. They have also put their heads together to launch Giving Tuesday, which will take place on November 27. We all know Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which are important days to stimulate and support the retail sector. But, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving was still up for grabs, so Timms and Feder thought to dedicate that day to giving back. Together with 450 organizations (and counting!), they are encouraging people to support organizations and initiatives that are making the world better – in any way they find meaningful.
